Burke, Gould, Floyd, Haywood Quartet
The long established Rob Burke Quartet of Burke, Floyd, Haywood, and Gould always approach music with a sense of adventure, the extent of which is a measure of musical and personal empathy and friendship developed over many years of making music together. While the quartet always takes the music seriously, there is an uncommon sense of joy in the music-making.
The quartet's repertoire is always evolving, with a mixture of originals, and pieces by others which have a sense of timelessness and are wonderful melodic vehicles ideal for improvisation. It is a group which insists on a spontaneous approach to playing, not just in the choice of lines and harmonies, but also in creative ways of manipulating more traditional formal structures. The sounds of surprise are never far away.
“Unrushed and meditative, dynamic and innovative. Much of the appeal here is the stately grace with which their ideas unfold. Harmonic colour and depth”. **** -Leon Gettler, The Age,18 September, 2003
