Late last year tenor saxophonist Julien Wilson put together his new quartet to play original works and reconsider those of others.
Over the last few years Wilson's performances have focussed on his trio with Steve Magnusson and Stephen Grant and bands such as Cools Cool and have focussed on other peoples compositions.
His only regular outlet for original compositions in a quartet format have been in Sydney with the Coathangers (Undy/Dewhurst/Barker).
"B for Chicken" focusses almost exclusively on Wilson's originals, including a swag of new material written in 2010 and songs from his out-of-print debut "while you were sleeping".
The inspiration for a return to the quartet format comes from the flexibility, drive and meaty tastiness of Hugh Harvey's astoundingly musical drumming,
while Fermanis' blues-drenched, rock-singed, take-no-prisoners guitar work fits Wilson's music like a well worn glove. (They have been playing together since they were teenagers).
Add to this the virtuosic beauty and creativity of Chris Hale's 6 string bass playing and we have a new band that sounds like they have been together for years and who know the inside of Julien's musical mind.
Julien was recently declared by Thai Matus to be Australia's "Saxophone Dundee". (Twelve Tone Diamonds performance Sunday 8th January 2012)
