This dynamic trio make their return to the MJC with a clutch of new compositions and an ever-evolving approach to improvisation in what promises to be another engaging performance. Since his 2010 debut CD release, 'The Singularity' drummer Sam Bates has remained very active in a variety of projects and in 2011 was awarded a fellowship from the Banff Centre International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music. He will be joined by Marc Hannaford (piano) and Philip Rex (acoustic bass). Within the context of a contemporary piano trio these three distinctive voices will jostle and collide but ultimately harmonize to create a dark atmosphere that proves conducive to explosive improvisation.
