The End was formed in 2009 by the guitarist and composer Tim Willis shortly after he returned from living in France for three years. The End showcases some of Melbourne's most promising up-and-coming talent; Jon Crompton on alto saxophone, John Felstead on tenor saxophone, Gareth Hill on bass, Nick Martyn on drums and Tim Willis on guitar. Their brand of jazz is rich in all the things that makes jazz great, but with a definite rock edge. The End seeks to follow in the path that has been cut by trailblazers such as Kneebody, Human Feel, Alasnoaxis and Marc Ribot and The Rootless Cosmopolitans, but still maintains a unique, original flavour.
The End has toured nationally and has been playing in and around Melbourne since their formation in 2009.
The End will be playing music from their recently released self titled debut album available through the Newmarket Music label, as well as songs from their up coming second album, soon to be released.
Every once in a while, there appears on the jazz scene a new band that is so startling in its originality, yet so approachable in performance that a tired old reviewer wonders if he is back in the 1950s when the Golden Age of Modern Jazz put the words original and approachable into context for the first time since the 1920s! Ron Spain, the Australian Jazzscene, Issue 11 August 2011.
