The Ben Winkelman Trio is an award-winning, innovative and dynamic contemporary jazz piano trio, playing all original repertoire that draws on diverse influences. These range from Cuban and Brazilian music to stride piano, odd time claves and classical music.
The trio has released two critically acclaimed albums on Jazzhead (The Spanish Tinge 2007, winner of a 2007 AIR award, and Stomps, Pieces & Variations 2005, nominated for a Bell award), toured Australia extensively in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and has played at many of the major national jazz and music festivals. In 2006 the trio appeared on ABC TV’s Sunday Arts program, and in 2008 made its first international tours to Japan and New Caledonia.
This performance is the launch of their third CD on Jazzhead, “Odysseys”, and the last gig of a national tour supported by the Contemporary Music Touring Program. Winkelman is joined by regular colleagues Sam Anning (bass) and Ben Vanderwal (drums). This will be the last chance to see this line-up for some time, as Sam Anning re-locates to New York later in August.
